What kind of insurance do I need to ride my motorcycle in Colorado?

For all Motorcyclists:

When insuring a motorcycle in Colorado, you’ll need to cover both state-mandated liability requirements and additional types of protection to ensure comprehensive coverage. In Colorado, liability insurance is mandatory for all motorcyclists, covering costs if you are at fault in an accident. The minimums are: $25,000 for bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident, and $15,000 for property damage. These limits are the minimum required, but many riders choose to go beyond them for added protection, as they may not cover more severe accidents.

For all financed motorcycles:

If you’re financing a motorcycle, lenders typically require full coverage insurance before you can take the bike off the lot. Full coverage includes collision and comprehensive insurance—with collision covering damages to your motorcycle from crashes and comprehensive covering incidents like theft, natural disasters, and animal strikes. This coverage is optional for units purchased outright with cash. Do consider that if you purchased your unit outright, having collision and comprehensive coverage on your policy can reduce the financial burden in the event of a crash or total loss.

Optional but highly recommended coverages include Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) and MedPay. UM/UIM coverage is valuable in Colorado, where minimum car insurance limits may not fully cover motorcyclists' injuries in severe accidents. MedPay, which can be added to your policy, covers medical expenses, regardless of fault, without needing to go through health insurance, making it particularly helpful in the case of high medical bills after an accident

Consulting with an insurance provider or a motorcycle-specific advisor can help tailor coverage based on your bike, riding habits, and personal finances.
