What is a Cruiser Motorcycle?

A cruiser is a type of motorcycle that’s typically built with comfort in mind. Cruisers tend to have a low seat, high and wide handlebars, and foot pegs near the front of the bike. This puts the rider in a neutral or slightly reclined position, making it more comfortable to ride long distances. The low seat also makes it easy to walk the bike when stopped or in slow-moving traffic. Cruisers typically also have a softer suspension to help filter out bumps and dips in the road, yielding a smooth ride.

There are a handful of different styles of motorcycle within the segment. Entry-level models are priced lower, have fewer options, and are more novice friendly takes on cruiser bikes. While they don’t necessarily lend themselves to urban riding or commuting, touring bikes are perfect for racking up miles on the open road. Powered by large engines and sporting a long wheelbase, these are highly stable due to their immense weight.

While a cruiser should always have the option to add a passenger or luggage, baggers sport large fairings, hard luggage, and a generously-sized passenger pillion. Like tourers, baggers are also great for long range travel, and are usually equipped with a wealth of amenities like heated grips, cruise control, and GPS navigation systems. Hyper-cruiser models are high performance cruisers that offer more lean angle, better acceleration and cornering, and are often equipped with componentry that’s regularly reserved for sport and superbike models.

You’ll find them listed under “modern classics” but Triumph has three models worthy of long open roads. The Speedmaster delivers a distinctive cruiser riding position with a timeless and sophisticated style. It’s a smooth and comfortable ride, with a low seat height, single button cruise control and a torque assisted clutch that make it a great choice for embarking on a long trip. The passenger seat can be removed, and an accessory rack can be installed in its place.

The Bonneville Bobber is also worthy of cruiser status because it has an ultra-low seat height, a low and leaned back riding position, and a torque twin-engine. It’s stunning to look at and includes road and rain ride modes, ABS/switchable traction control, and a torque assist clutch. A well-hidden monoshock helps maintain the Bobber’s hard-tail motif, and an all-LED headlight and cruise control are now standard options.

The Rocket 3 boasts incredible acceleration, the latest in stability control including ABS, cruise and multiple rider modes. With adjustable ergonomics, this motorcycle is catered to cruising and long-distance touring and offers incredible control, comfort and capability. A 5 gallon tank, hidden folding footrests, comfy pillion and rider seats with a low height and a torque assisted clutch are just a few of the details that balance out power with comfort and functionality.
