Motorcycle Riding Tips

Safety should be at the forefront of every motorcyclist’s mind. Bikes offer little to no protection between riders and the roads, so it’s important to be mindful of yourself and those around you. To help you stay safe on Thornton roads, Erico Motorsports has put together the following list of motorcycle safety tips. From wearing the right gear to observing your surroundings, your actions count and can mean the difference between staying safe and putting yourself in a dangerous situation.

What Are Some General Motorcycle Safety Tips?

  • Wear a Helmet: Currently, 19 states and the District of Columbia require that motorcycle riders wear helmets. While wearing a helmet isn’t a legal requirement in Colorado, it’s better to be safe than sorry. When choosing a helmet, make sure it includes a face shield or protective eyewear.
  • Wear Riding Apparel / Gear: In a motorcycle accident, every piece of clothing acts as armor, helping to reduce injuries and road rash. Wearing a helmet, heavy leather clothing, boots, gloves, and more will help keep you protected should the unexpected occur.
  • Know the Rules of the Road: Keep in mind that the faster you’re going, the longer it’ll take you to stop. Follow the speed limit at all times, and make sure you’re familiar with local motorcycling laws.
  • Watch Your Surroundings: Try to make yourself as visible as possible to drivers. Ride with your headlights on, signal when you turn, and avoid riding in drivers’ blind spots. Make sure you’re always on the lookout for turning vehicles.
  • Educate Yourself: When it comes to learning how to ride intelligently and safely, you can never be overeducated. Take a formal riding class to learn more about riding techniques and how to stay safe on the road.
  • NEVER Drink & Drive: It’s that simple: don’t drink and drive. Alcohol will impair your ability to react and make judgement calls while on the road.

Keep Up with Routine Motorcycle Maintenance

This is one of the most important motorcycle safety tips to keep in mind. Before heading out on your bike, it’s important to make sure it’s in good working condition — and that means routine maintenance for the following areas:

  • Brakes — check the front and rear brakes to ensure they’re working properly
  • Tires — make sure the tires are correctly inflated with no signs of damage
  • Lights — make sure the low and high beams are working
  • Fluids — check the hydraulic and coolant levels every week
  • Clutch & Throttle — ensure that the throttle snaps back when it’s released
  • Horn — make sure the horn works
  • Mirrors — keep the mirrors clean

If you need help keeping your bike in peak condition, our service department is staffed with certified technicians who know bikes inside and out. Whether your bike needs an oil change or a thorough wash, we’ve got you covered!
