How to Wash a Motorcycle

If you’re an avid rider, you know how much road grime you can pick up just driving around town on your new or used bike. You probably also understand how much damage that grime can do to your motorcycle’s parts, paint, and upholstery. Fortunately, cleaning it up and keeping it looking its best requires only a bit of your time and some basic supplies you can easily find around Denver. Read on to learn how to wash a motorcycle!

Gather Supplies

It will be easier to get the job done if you have your supplies handy before you start.

Essential Supplies:

  • Bucket
  • Sponge
  • Clean, dry, lint-free towels
  • Degreaser
  • WD-40
  • Toothbrush/detail brushes
  • Soap automotive cleaner
  • Bug and tar remover
Optional Supplies:

  • Auto or motorcycle wax
  • Chrome cleaner
  • Leather/vinyl cleaner
  • Glass cleaner

Building a kit in a 5-gallon bucket speeds up this part immensely.

If you’ve ridden the bike recently, allow it to cool down before you get the hose. Wetting down a hot engine can cause the block to crack, which would lead to expensive repairs. Once cooled, pre-cleaning can begin:

  • Clean the Chain. WD-40 works as a solvent to remove the dirt and grease and can be used to lubricate the chain after the bike is cleaned.
  • Get in the Crevices. Use a soft brush and solvent to clean non-chrome parts and to scrub dirt and debris from hard-to-reach places. Try to avoid the brake lines and bearings, as this can cause corrosion.

Complete Wash

Use a sponge and cool water to remove accumulated dirt. If you’ve recently driven down salted Thornton winter roads, avoid soap, as it can make salt issues worse. If your bike has plastic components, use a mild soap to clean these, and be sure to rinse thoroughly when finished.

Dry Your Bike

If you plan to wax your bike, dry it thoroughly with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove any water spots. If you don’t plan to wax or are short on time, air drying is fine as well! Once your bike is clean and dry, apply vinyl or leather protectant to the seat and lubricate the chain and bearings for a smooth ride.
